Overview
For years, Insurance Carriers and Benefit Administration (BA) platforms have touted “integrated”, end-to-end benefits experiences for employees and HR teams alike. While the employee enrollment experience has significantly improved through the use of BAs, the rest of the process, from plan setup to EOI to Billing and Claims, leaves much to be desired. Through our API integrations, Mutual of Omaha aims to change that.
What is an API?
API stands for Application Programming Interface. What it really means is an easier and faster way to securely integrate information from multiple sources. At Mutual of Omaha, we are investing our resources into applying APIs to make the experience working with us as easy for you as possible.
How We Got Here
Here at Mutual of Omaha, we have been on a multi-year technology modernization journey re-building and restructuring our systems and data to meet the ever-changing business needs of our industry. We’ve taken the time to re-build with a focus on flexibility which will allow us to connect with our clients and technology partners in a way that works best for them. Gone are the days of insurance carriers bending the business process to meet their outdated legacy system limitations.
With API integration, it will ensure accuracy of plan, rate and eligibility rule setup in the benefit administration platform. This will reduce discrepancies and invalid claims.
APIs will reduce group implementation time from months to days, automate plan configuration processes within the benefit administration platform and eliminate the need for any requirement clarification discussions between Mutual of Omaha and the client, broker or the benefit administrator.
These integrations will significantly reduce resources needed at the employer, broker and benefit administrator to implement a group onto the platform.
Plan Configuration will allow Mutual of Omaha to push the plan, rate and eligibility rule information directly into the benefit administration platform without any manual intervention.

It seems like every 5 or so years, the insurance industry comes up with a new buzzword or acronym that everyone can’t stop talking about. The latest are APIs. So, what are they and what will they REALLY do for you?
So, What is an API?
API stands for Application Programming Interface. APIs have been around for a long time and are in action behind the scenes in almost every industry except group insurance...until now. Simply put, APIs provide an easier and faster way to securely integrate information from multiple sources. A great example of APIs at work in other industries is our ability to see multiple airlines price quotes on a given flight route all aggregated into an easy to understand format on a travel website.
How Does it Affect Me?
Plan Setup
This is the foundational API integration. It automates the setup of benefit plan rules, rates and summary info in your benefit administration platform reducing implementation time to days vs. weeks and ensures accurate plan information shown to employees.
EOI
Embedded EOI form in the employee enrollment process and real-time EOI decisions pushed back into the benefit administration platform allow for a streamlined employee experience and automated decisions process. No more monthly reports requiring the HR team to navigate through the benefits administration platform to approve or reject employee by employee.
Claims Management
Track claim status and manage absences for payroll or attendance purposes, all from your benefit administration platform.
Today an “integrated” partnership between a benefit technology platform and carrier generally refers to a one-way weekly batch transfer of eligibility data from the benefit technology to the carrier. This is an important, but small piece of the entire data integration puzzle. APIs allow for the multi-directional flow of information across all carrier and benefit technology data.
